Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both the two episodes she appeared on Roseanne. However, her parents did not permit her to perform until she reached the age of adulthood due to the negative effects that stress could affect their child. Perry acknowledged that she was not comfortable acting in high school, but started acting to meet new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry was able to land small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. The feeling of homelessness, however, brought her back to California to return, where she started working on stage. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway with her as part of The Other Place, in 2013. In the year 2015, she was together with Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie. The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC political drama Scandal which starred her father. The character she played was the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off episode that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. The character was chosen via auditions though she had a close association with it.
